CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Sabrina drew a deep, centering breath as the whirl of transition ended. “You guys okay?”

From behind on her right, Garrett replied, “A little nauseated, thanks.”

The new marshal, Cait, said, “Yeah. That was trippy.”

Sabrina grinned. “No doubt. Welcome to Sabrina’s joyride. Please keep your hands and feet in the car if you wish not to lose them.”

The scenario surrounding them was her starting place on the magical dark web, a wide-open college campus courtyard filled with imaginary people playing Frisbee, sunbathing, and so forth. She’d never had that experience personally but had seen it in a movie once and thought it sounded fun. It helped her to get her mind where she wanted it to be.

She gestured at herself, and an approximation of Sherlock Holmes’ overcoat and deerstalker cap appeared over her normal clothes. A dog materialized at her side, a bloodhound, and stared up at her. She nodded. “Yes, Spot. We’re on the hunt.”

She turned her hand, a gold coin appeared in it, and she flipped it in the air. It landed on the ground in front of the dog, and he sniffed it, making amusing grunts and snuffling noises as he thoroughly investigated it. He finally looked up at her and barked, and she vanished the coin. “Okay. Find it.”

He raced forward, and she jogged beside him, his little legs keeping him at a pace she could easily match. In the real world, “Spot” was an artificial intelligence program she’d written specifically to track the movement of money. As they ran, the surrounding scenery changed.

Hard-edged seams transformed the surroundings as they proceeded through them, almost like rooms of different houses. From her construct, they moved into what she recognized as the English countryside north of London. Next was Tokyo, then Chicago, Rio, and Paris.

As they passed through more countries, she explained for the benefit of those behind her, “He’s following an electronic money trail. The data we pulled gave him potential starting points, and somewhere along this path he’s picked up the scent for real.”

Finally, they burst out into a bright street with pedestrians walking on either side. Small cars whipped by as they barreled between their position and the beautiful Colonial building opposite. It had a pitched roof, multiple floors, and tall pillars supporting a separate cover that protected the stairs leading up to it.

Sabrina sighed. “We’re in the Caymans. How original.” Her avatar rolled its eyes. She knelt and patted the dog on the head. “Good boy, Spot.” A dog biscuit appeared in her hand, and he ate it. She thanked him, and he vanished, along with her coat and hat. Rising, she gestured at the building ahead. “His money is in there. The bad news is a warrant won’t work here. The worse news is that it’s a real bank, not some rinky-dink operation, which means getting in and out without being noticed will be a challenge.”

Cait asked, “Should we stop?”

Sabrina grinned. “Hell, no. I wanted to be sure you’d be appropriately impressed by my talents.
